In Jesus’s day, the rabbis taught that Jews should forgive those who offended them three times. Peter, in trying to be generous asked Christ if seven [the perfect number] was enough times to forgive someone. But Jesus answered ” Seventy times seven, meaning that we should not even keep track of the number of times.
When we refuse to forgive, we set ourselves outside and above Christ’s law of love.
Today, let us reflect on these words of George Herbert
” He who cannot forgive others breaks the bridge over which he must pass himself.”
Jesus, please give us the gift of forgiveness. Amen
