First Big Snowstorm On The Avenue – A Memory – Story

This time of the year brings back many fond memories, I hope for all of us. I love living in southern California, but I also love my memories of the first big snowstorm I experienced as a child living in New York City.

First big snowstorm On The avenue

From the age of four I lived in a tenement building on 106 th Street and Third Ave in Manhattan. The Third Ave El trains ran overhead on 106 th St, and the trollies ran under the trains. When the first big snowstorm came the overhead trains on my street would block the snow. I would run into the avenue because the avenue was wide, and open. It gave me a sense of freedom. The heavy snowflakes came dawn hard, hitting me in all directions. I laughed, and laughed, while jumping up and down. I felt so happy. Flakes and flakes of white thick beautiful snow. It was freezing outside, but somehow the snow made me feel warmer. I rose up my head, danced around, and around, and then I  just stood still, and  let the snow fall on my head, and face. I stuck out my tongue to get a taste of the beautiful snow. I looked forward to that ritual each year until I moved away. Should I ever return to the avenue I hope it will be for the first big snowstorm of the year, even though the El trains are no longer there to block the snow?
